BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University men's soccer team followed the same formula it used Saturday, scoring a goal early and scoring a goal late, en route to a 2-1 victory over visiting Heidelberg University on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2025. Bluffton improved to 3-2-3 on the season, while Heidelberg slipped to 0-6-1 overall.
Senior Brycen Boyle (Middletown) hooked up with freshman Devin Homan (Dayton/Stebbins) just 5:35 into the match for a quick 1-0 Bluffton lead on Wednesday afternoon. The home team controlled the ball, piling up a 14-3 advantage in shots during the first 45 minutes, but a missed penalty kick left the score at 1-1 heading to the second stanza.
The Beavers continued to force the issue in the final half and it paid off when Andrew Ireland (Coshocton) found Alex Brown (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) in front of the net and the stalwart junior defender did the rest, tapping it into the lower left corner for what turned out to be the game winner with less than nine minutes to play!
The home team finished with a convincing 22-5 edge in total shots, including 14-3 on frame. Bluffton was called for two more fouls (8-6) and it forced four of five corner kicks Wednesday at the Sears Complex. Heidelberg finished with four offsides infractions, compared to none for the Beavers.
Homan and JJ Meyer (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) paced the offense with five and four shots, respectively. Sophomore keeper Zach Johnson (Middletown) improved to 2-0-2, collecting two saves for the Beavers.
Bluffton is back at home for its fourth straight match when Rose-Hulman comes to town for the Heartland Conference opener on Saturday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. following the women's matchup with the Fightin' Engineers.
