Bluffton caps off 2024-25 at HCAC Championship

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana - Last week, the Bluffton University Swim and Dive team traveled to Terre Haute, Ind., where they competed in the 4-day Heartland Conference Championship! It took place from February 12 through February 15. Each swimmer on the team had a remarkable performance and made history! 
 
February 12
 
Junior Sydney Grisier (Bryan) competed in the 3-meter diving Wednesday night. She did 11 dives and broke her school record! Grisier scored 215.20, which got her to the A finals, snatching the 6th place spot and scoring the first points for the women's swim and dive team! 
 
February 13
 
Freshman Jami Baker (Lowell Ind./Lowell) ended up swimming the 50 freestyle with a time of 35.10. Junior Juliana Brooks (Canton) came back to race at conference after suffering from an injury all season and ended up dropping time! Brooks swam the 50 freestyle with a time of 31.13. 
 
Grisier, Brooks, Baker, and sophomore Havin Montague (Celina) competed in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2:26.97. They placed 7th, earning points for the team. They also raced the 400 medley relay with a time of 5:47.35, taking 6th which also scored points for the team. 
 
The entire men's squad swam the 50 freestyle. Sophomore Grant Patton (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) got a time of 24.82. Junior Riley Bruns (Maria Stein/Marion Local) swam a 26.46. Freshman Landon Gardner (Whitehall, Mich./Grand Haven) finished in 24.44. Last but not least, freshman Justin Hassranah (Cunupia, Trinidad and Tobago/Vishnu Boys Hindu College) swam a record time of 23.98! 
 
Hassranah, Gardner, Patton, and Bruns competed in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 1:39.85. They placed 6th, earning the first points for the boys' swim and dive team! They also ended up breaking the record! 
 
February 14
 
The girls competed in the 200 medley relay on Friday, placing 6th (2:31.76) and earning even more points for the team. The boys also competed in the 200 medley relay, placing 7th with a time of 1:58.06 which earned points for the Beavers.
 
Montague raced the 400 IM, making it to the B finals! She earned the time of 7.25.88, making her 14th and earning a point for the team. Her time is now 5th all-time in the record book! Baker swam the 100 breaststroke and got a time of 1:12.43. She ended up making the A final and placed 4th overall! Her time is now 2nd all-time in the record books. Grisier competed in the 11-dive 1-meter diving. She made it to the A finals and took 6th place with a score of 237.70. All the girls earned points for the team!
 
Bruns raced the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:30.42, placing 21st. Gardner also raced in the breaststroke, taking 20th with a time of 1:12.21. Gardner ended up breaking the school record by almost six seconds! Patton swam the 100 backstroke, placing 16th with a time of 1:04.98 which was 5th all-time! Hassranah also swam the 100-backstroke, getting a time of 1:04.53, which makes his time 4th all-time! 
 
February 15
 
On the final day, Grisier swam the mile with a time of 25.49.09. She qualified for the B final and placed 14th, earning a point. 
 
Montague swam the 200 backstroke (3:14.55), dropping almost 10 seconds! She also competed in the 200 butterfly (4:29.06) making it to the B finals where she placed 8th, earning points for the team. Brooks swam the 100-freestyle, placing 18th with a time of 1:11.62. Baker competed in the 200-breaststroke, qualifying for B-final. She placed 9th with a time of 2:41.67.
 
Hassranah raced the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:22.20. He qualified for the B final and placed 12th! His time is 2nd all-time. Patton competed in the 100 freestyle placing 17th with a time of 55.59. Gardner raced the 200 breaststroke, placing 16th with a time of 2:43.69. He smashed the record, dropping almost 15 seconds!
To end the week, both girls and boys competed in the 400 free relays. Grisier, Baker, Montague, and Brooks placed 7th with a time of 5:09.46. That puts them 3rd all-time! Gardner, Hassranah, Patton, and Bruns placed 6th with a time of 3:50.20, which gives them the school record!
 
Bluffton Swim and Dive ended up with a total score of 202! The girls scored 135 points, which gives them the school record. The boys scored 67 points, which also gives them the record! Both teams placed 7th in the HCAC. The team had a phenomenal season with many broken records, and PRs. Go Beavers!
