BEREA, Ohio - Select members of the Bluffton University track and field team headed to Baldwin Wallace on Thursday and Friday in an attempt to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Division III National Championships.
Despite competing in just a smattering of events, two school records went by the wayside on Friday, May 10. Senior Desmond Gist (Detroit, Mich./Trenton) broke his own record in the 110 meter hurdles with a 14.26 that helped him edge out Mikhi Anderson from West Liberty by 1 thousandth of a second for first place! Gist followed that up with a long jump of 6.55 meters what was 8th on Friday. He is currently 10th in the nation for the high hurdles with one more week of qualifying.
The 4x400 relay which consisted of Gist, Blayden McCoy (Fresno/Ridgewood), Simon Shawk (Galion) and Russell Lough (Wintersville/Indian Creek) also broke one of the longest-standing school records (2005) with a time of 3:17.27 (37th in the nation) at the Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet!
Thursday night was Coen North (Denver/Noth) time at Baldwin Wallace as the sophomore placed second out of 15 competitors in the javelin. He finished with an outstanding toss of 49.20 meters, just a little over a meter behind winner Brady Burrey from Mount Union.
The tracksters who are continuing to compete will be at Mount Union in Alliance next Thursday, May 16, for the final NCAA qualifying event of the spring. Continue to check the track and field webpage for updates regarding the NCAA Nationals at Myrtle Beach in less than two weeks!
