Bluffton sweeps Adrian in 2002 home opener

March 18, 2002

Senior Emily Kurtz threw a two hitter in the first game and freshman shortstop Amada Snider drove in the game winning run in the second game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Bluffton College softball team two victories over Adrian College on March 13.

The games were Bluffton's first home contests of the season at Marbeck Field and were the Beavers' first wins of the season following an 0-8 record at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla., March 4-8. BC will return to action Wednesday, March 20, at home against Thomas More College in a double-header beginning at 3 p.m. before traveling to Mount St. Joseph on Friday and Transylvania on Saturday for Bluffton's first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action of the season.

In the first game against Adrian, Kurtz only allowed two runners to reach as far as third base and struck out five batters as BC took a 4-1 victory. In the home half of the second inning, sophomore Amanda DeVaul knocked in the first run of the game after back-to-back singles by Missy Neal and Allison Lange. Bluffton then put the game out of reach in the sixth inning as Neal delivered a two run single.

Game two saw Bluffton come from behind in their final at bat for a 6-5 victory. Trailing 5-4 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, BC's rally began as Neal was hit by a pitch and Lange singled, followed by base hit by DeVaul, which scored Neal to tie the game. Snider then stepped to the plate and drilled a hit to left field scoring Lange with the game-winning run.

Bluffton's offense was led in the double-header by Lange (5-for-7) and Stephanie Rush (4-for-8), while also contributing at the plate were Neal (3-for-6) and DeVaul (3-for-7, 2 RBI). On the mound both Kurtz and junior Stacy Herr picked up their first victories on the season.
