Beavers drop two at Albion

ALBION, Mich. - The Bluffton University softball team (8-15, 1-3 HCAC) dropped a pair of contests to the Albion College Britons on Saturday, April 8, 2006. Albion dominated the Beavers 8-0 in five innings for a victory in the first game. Bluffton fell by a score of 4-0 in game two at Albion.

GAME ONE - ALBION 8, BLUFFTON 0 (5 INN.)

Bluffton threatened to score in the first inning when senior MICHELLE MOTTER(Lakeview/Indian Lake) singled with two outs and moved to third thanks to an error by the right fielder on a ball hit by sophomore AMANDA HARRIS (Greenville/Greenville). Freshman LINDSEY MILLER (Wapakoneta/Wapakoneta) flied out to right ending the inning.

The Britons used a pair of hits and two Bluffton errors in the bottom of the first to take the 2-0 lead.

Albion put together four runs in the third inning to up its lead to six runs at the end of the frame. PRZESLEWSKI opened the inning with a leadoff single to center field. She moved to second on a DICKEY sacrifice bunt before ENGLISH plated her with a double to right center. With two outs, LOEGEL reached on an error keeping the inning alive for MAIORANA who ripped a double to center field picking up English. A VLCEK double sent both Loegel and Maiorana across the plate before the Beavers retired the Britons.

JENNA HOGG retired the side in order for Albion during the fourth and fifth innings while the Britons tacked on a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to take an eight run lead with no outs in the fifth when the game was called.

Hogg improved to 5-2 as she limited the Beavers to a pair of singles and no runs in her complete game 8-0 victory over Bluffton.

Motter and SARAH NUSBAUM (Fairview/Fairview) collected the lone hits for the Beavers who dropped to 8-14 with the loss.


GAME TWO - ALBION 4, BLUFFTON 0

Albion took the early 1-0 lead over the Beavers in game two thanks to a walk and an error.

Przeslewski went yard with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to give the Britons a two-run advantage.

The Britons tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning. English doubled to center field to open the inning and she moved to third when GOVE reached on a Bluffton error. A GILLO single to center plated both Britons who opened a 4-0 lead that held up as the Beavers were swept by a strong Albion squad, 8-0 and 4-0.

English was stellar on the mound as she held Bluffton to three hits and no runs for the complete game victory.

Motter and Nusbaum again picked up hits for Bluffton, as well as pitcher TONYA DEAN(Kettering/Kettering) who singled in the top of the second inning.

With the loss, the Beavers fell to 8-15 overall and 1-3 in the Heartland Conference.

Bluffton returns to action on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, when it hosts Huntington for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
