Beavers split non-conference double-header with Findlay

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University softball team split a doubleheader with the NCAA Division II University of Findlay on Tuesday, April 24, in non-conference action. The Beavers fell in game one by a final score of 7-1, but Bluffton fought back in the second contest and won, 3-1. With the victory, Bluffton improved to 11-13 overall.

GAME 1 - FINDLAY 7, BLUFFTON 1

The Oilers jumped to an early lead scoring three runs in the first inning. Five consecutive batters for Findlay reached base safely to open the contest before a pair of infield groundouts ended the inning.

Bluffton scored its only run of the game in its first at-bat. CARRIE WEISBECKER(Okeana/Ross) smacked a double to left center and BROOKE BABCOCK (Findlay/Findlay) drove Weisbecker home when she grounded out to the shortstop.

Findlay put the game on ice when it sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the second, pushing four more runs across the plate for a 7-1 lead over the Beavers.

KELLIE KENNEY (Toledo/Emmanuel Baptist) took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in five innings of action.

GAME 2 - BLUFFTON 3, FINDLAY 1

The Beavers jumped out to a two-run lead in the second inning and never looked back. Weisbecker started the scoring by ripping a single to left field before she moved into scoring position on Babcock's fielder's choice. AMANDA HARRIS (Arcanum/Arcanum) followed suit and drove Weisbecker in on her fielder's choice to second. KATIE AMMONS (Findlay/Findlay) continued the scoring when she laced a single to left field which scored Harris.

Bluffton added one more run in the top of the third when LAURA BROWN (Sullivan/Black River) singled to third and was moved into scoring position by a bunt from LINDSEY MILLER(Wapakoneta/Wapakoneta). Weisbecker drove Brown home when she singled to left field.

Ammons, Brown and Weisbecker all finished with two hits in the second contest.

Brown picked up her first win for the season, allowing only one run on five hits in five innings. Babcock picked up her first save of the year by limiting the Oilers to only one hit and no runs in two innings of work.

Bluffton will be back in action on Thursday, April 26, when the Beavers host Defiance College for the final regular season home games. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
