Bluffton drops two on opening day at Rebel Spring Games

March 8, 2010

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Bluffton University softball team saw its offense grounded on opening day as the Beavers scratched out just two runs on Monday, March 8, in the opening contests of the 2010 campaign. Benedictine took a 3-1 decision over the Beavers before Greensboro rallied with four late runs in a 5-1 win over Bluffton.

BENEDICTINE 3, BLUFFTON 1

Bluffton had its back against the wall on the wrong end of a perfect game bid by BRITTANY ADCOX who retired the first 18 batters she faced. Down 3-0 and with just three outs left in the contest, freshman SHELBY WADE (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) broke up the perfect game and no-hitter with a two-bagger down the left field line in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore CHELSIE OSBORNE (Chillicothe/Waverly) picked her up with an RBI single up the middle before JAYME MARBAUGH'S (Ohio City/Parkway) base hit put runners on the corners with no outs. Adcox was unfazed and two strikeouts later, Benedictine had its third win in as many tries as the Beavers dropped a 3-1 decision in the 2010 lidlifter.

BROOKE BABCOCK (Findlay) took the loss despite tossing seven solid innings in her first outing of the season. She gave up three runs on six hits and walked just one batter. Adcox threw a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts while picking up the victory.

GREENSBORO 5, BLUFFTON 1

With a 1-1 pitching duel brewing through the first five innings, Greensboro broke out with four runs on three hits and three Bluffton errors in a wild sixth frame. Following a single and hit batter to start the sixth, K. BURNETT moved both runners into scoring position with a well-executed sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back Bluffton miscues allowed two more runs to score before another error made the score 5-1. EMILY MANAHAN (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) laced a one-out single to right in the top of the seventh, but a game-ending double play retired the threat as Bluffton fell to 0-2 with the 5-1 setback.

MEAGAN PRICE (Toledo/Springfield) plated TORRIE WILSON (Delphos/Jefferson) with a single in the Bluffton fifth. KRISTIN AGAUAS (Bloomfield Hills/Andover) fell to 0-1 with the loss. She gave up five runs, just two earned, on nine hits in 5.1 innings in the circle. Agauas struck out three and walked two.

The Beavers return to action on Tuesday, March 9, when they play Thomas More at 3 p.m. The contest is slated for diamond two at the Fortune Road complex.
