Trine rallies to complete sweep of Beavers

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University dropped its second doubleheader to an MIAA squad in as many days when Trine rallied with three runs in the seventh inning on Friday, March 19, 2010.  The Beavers dipped to 1-10 on the season, while Trine improved to 7-3 following the sweep.

TRINE 11, BLUFFTON 3

A SARAH BELOTE homer to center field gave Trine a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second inning. The Thunder added four more tallies in the fourth thanks to back-to-back run-scoring bunts and a LAUREN HARRIS RBI double to left center.

Tara Sipperly made it 7-0 in the sixth with her two-run double to center field before the Bluffton bats finally went to work in the home half of the frame. KRISTIN AGAUAS (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover) looped a one-out single down the right field line to start the rally. JESSICA MCDONALD (Mechanicsburg) followed with a single up the middle before both runners moved into scoring position thanks to a wild pitch. Jayme Marbaugh (Ohio City/Parkway) delivered a two-RBI double to right center. She crossed the dish when ALLISON RADOMSKI'S(Fairfield/Cincinnati Christian) infield single drew a throw that went wide of the plate.

With the Beavers on the verge of a stunning comeback, Trine took advantage of consecutive two-out walks in the top of the seventh when pinch hitter RACHEL WISMAN pounded a grand slam over the wall in left center for an 11-3 victory in the opener.

McDonald and Radomski both went 2-of-3 while Marbaugh drove in two runs. BROOKE BABCOCK (Findlay) fell to 1-5 on the season, giving up five runs on four hits with two walks in 3.1 innings of work.

TRINE 5, BLUFFTON 4

Trine plated single runs in both the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead after three. The Beavers responded with three scores in the fourth to take their first lead of the night. Babcock ignited the two-out rally with a base hit to center field. Marbaugh's infield single moved pinch runner MACKENZIE MAYER (Versailles) to second. STEVIE CUTTITTA'S (Columbiaville, Mich./Clio) single to left center plated Marbaugh before EMILY MANAHAN (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) put the home team on top with her two-run knock to right center.

Radomski walked and scored to make it 4-2 after five innings, but Trine made use of three Bluffton errors in the top of the seventh to paste three unearned runs on the board. The visitors shut down the Beavers in the bottom of the frame to complete their sweep at Bluffton with a 5-4 victory.

Emily Manahan and MEAGAN PRICE (Toledo/Springfield) both finished the nightcap 2-of-3. Manahan drove in two runs for Bluffton. Stevie Cuttitta dropped to 0-4 despite allowing just one earned run. She gave up eight hits and one free pass in 6.1 innings.

Bluffton returns to action with a home doubleheader against Alma College on Friday, March 26, at 3:30 p.m.
