Beavers come away with split at Ursuline

April 17, 2010

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio - The Bluffton University softball team split a pair of games on a near-freezing and blustery Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Ursuline College. The Beavers moved to 12-15 overall while the Arrows improved to 7-17 on the season.

URSULINE 2, BLUFFTON 1

Bluffton took a 1-0 lead with what turned out to be its only run of the first game when an Ursuline error allowed JESSICA MCDONALD (Mechanicsburg) to score following a MEAGAN PRICE (Toledo/Springfield) base hit to right field in the top of the second inning.

The home team answered back with two scores in bottom of the third. The two-out rally started with an infield single by KRISTEN ROZNOSKI. After a stolen base and walk, HILLARY BEACHY delivered with a two-RBI double to center field for a 2-1 lead.

Five scoreless innings by Bluffton to end the game assured Ursuline of a 2-1 victory despite the Beavers out-hitting the Arrows 7-4 while the home team also committed three errors.

SHELBY WADE (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) and JAYME MARBAUGH (Ohio City/Parkway) finished the lidlifter with two hits each while Jessica McDonald scored the lone run. BROOKE BABCOCK (Findlay) slipped to 6-7 on the season after giving up two runs on two hits with three walks in four innings of work.

BLUFFTON 3, URSULINE 2

Bluffton jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the second. EMILY MANAHAN(Columbus/Bishop Watterson) laced a one-out single to center and she came around to score when Jayme Marbaugh ripped a two-bagger to left center. She made it 2-0 when an Ursuline wild pitch allowed her to score from second base.

Marbaugh, who finished the day 4-of-5 with a sacrifice bunt, picked up ALLISON RADOMSKI(Cincinnati/Christian) with her second double of the game, making it 3-0 in the top of the fourth.

Ursuline cut the Bluffton lead to two runs in the home half of the fourth and the Arrows threatened with another score in the seventh, but the Beavers held on for the 3-2 win in the nightcap.

Manahan and Marbaugh both rapped a pair of hits in game two. Marbaugh drove in two and scored a run. Freshman hurler STEVIE CUTTITTA (Columbiaville, Mich./Clio) evened her record at 5-5 after a solid two-run complete game performance. She struck out three and allowed six hits with a walk.

The Beavers return to action on Wednesday, April 21, when they host Heidelberg University. The first game is slated to start at 3 p.m.
