Bluffton splits Sunday series at Albion

ALBION, Mich. - The Bluffton University softball team earned a split at Albion on Sunday, March 21, 2021. Bluffton took game one (3-2) before the Britons won game two (10-2) in six innings. The Beavers moved to 3-7, while Albion stands at 3-1 on the season.

Bluffton plated a pair of runs thanks to an Albion error in inning one. Sophomores Bobbi Adams (Delaware/Rutherford B. Hayes) and Lily Tate (Mount Gilead/Northmor) came around to score when Taylor Shimp (St. Marys/Memorial) reached courtesy of an Albion miscue.

The home team pulled even with a homer in the second a sacrifice fly in the fourth before Sydney Bowen's (Convoy/Crestview) double sent Shimp scurrying home in the top of the sixth.

Senior Katie McCord (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) picked up the win after tossing three innings of shutout relief. McCord allowed just one hit and struck out one batter. Tate paced the Beaver offense with three hits.

Bowen scored in the second inning of game two and Taylor Steinke (Findlay) singled home Tate in the third, but two Albion runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the sixth gave the Britons a 10-2 mercy-rule victory in Sunday's capper.

Steinke, who was at the soccer field for Senior Day on Saturday, paced the Beavers with three safeties in game two. Adams added a pair of hits for the visitors.

Sophomore Erin Norman (Pleasant Hill/Newton) fell to 1-2 after giving up six runs on seven hits in her three-inning start. She walked three and struck out two.

Bluffton will be back at home on Tuesday, March 23, when the Beavers welcome rival Defiance College for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
