Penn State-Behrend too much in season opener

November 16, 2001

Tournament host Penn State Behrend shot 53% from the floor en route to a 73-54 victory over Bluffton College Friday night in the opening game of the 2001-02 season.

Bluffton got 12 points from junior Kristin Helvey and freshman Kerrie Ericson, but were held to a 34% shooting clip from the floor and were 3-15 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Penn State Behrend jumped out to a 13-2 lead early in the game and led by 16 points at halftime. Two buckets from Melissa James, including a 3-pointer, and a layup from Helvey cut the deficit to 11 points with 7:15 left in the game, but the hosts scored 10 of the game's final 13 points to claim the victory.

Junior Lyndsey Robinson added eight points, while James chipped in seven.
