Bluffton falls to Capital 71-54 despite second half spurt

November 24, 2001

Bluffton College shot 62% from the floor in the second half and outscored Capital University 45-40, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 31-9 halftime deficit as the Beavers fell 71-54 in Columbus on Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders, ranked ninth in the latest d3hoops.com poll, jumped out to a 24-2 lead early in the ballgame and held BC to a 10% shooting clip in the first half.

BC juniors Kristin Helvey and Melissa James combined for 22 second half points and sparked a 19-8 run midway through the final 20 minutes to cut the margin to 13 points with 7:04 left to play.

An 8-0 Capital run at that point, however, which included six points from Danielle Meyer, ended the BC threat. Meyer finished with a game-high 21 points to lead Capital.

Capital improves to 4-0 on the season, while Bluffton sees their record slip to 0-4 and will take on Manchester College on Wednesday night at 7:00 in Founders Hall in the Beavers' first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game of the season.
