Beavers fall to undefeated Heidelberg 73-61

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's basketball team (2-3) traveled to Heidelberg College on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 and fell to the undefeated Student Princes (4-0) by a final score of 73-61. The loss ended the Beavers' two-game winning streak as Heidelberg's depth wore Bluffton down in the second half. The Beavers shot well at the free throw line (14-16) but Heidelberg capitalized on Bluffton miscues, scoring 26 points off 25 Beaver turnovers. The Berg hit 26 of 55 shots for 47.3 percent compared to Bluffton's 22 of 50 for 44.0 percent.   

Bluffton jumped out to a 14-5 lead five minutes into the game as sophomore ASHLEIGH STALLKAMP (Paulding/Paulding) found open teammates for three slick assists. Heidelberg trailed by eight points (19-11) before the Beavers went cold from the field and the Student Princes rolled off 19 unanswered points to take a 30-19 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. Sophomore ANGIE LEE (Mt. Blanchard/Vanlue) picked up the slack for the Beavers and put up eight points over the next three minutes to help whittle the Heidelberg advantage to two points (35-33) at the break.

Consecutive buckets by junior TANYA RICKENBERG (Paulding/Paulding) knotted the contest at 37 early in the second stanza. Heidelberg and Bluffton traded scores until the 12-minute mark when sophomore LINDSAY BUSH (Howard/East Knox) put the Beavers up 49-47 with a basket in the paint. Six turnovers over the next six minutes spelled doom for Bluffton as the Berg opened up a six-point lead. The Beavers were forced to foul and Heidelberg hit seven free throws down the stretch on their way to a 73-61 victory that left their record unblemished at 4-0.

Lee came in off the bench and led the Beavers with a career-high 18 points on six of 11 shooting, including three of four from beyond the arc. Rickenberg also finished in double-digits as she tallied 14 points and led Bluffton with eight boards. FreshmanSARAH BRUNER (Wauseon/Pettisville) recorded six points and six rebounds for the Beavers.

Bluffton returns to action on Saturday, December 3, 2005 when it hosts the Denison University Big Red in the second game of a Bluffton University Community Day doubleheader in Founders Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
