Women primed for assault on Bluffton record books

The Bluffton University women's golf team is primed to continue its assault on the record books when the Beavers hit the links in 2020. Although the spring season never materialized due to COVID-19, the 2019-20 women obliterated every school mark many times over. A round of 355 at the UNOH Invitational knocked over 40 strokes off the school record and when that 355 was combined with a 358, it established 713 as the best 36-hole score in school history!

The Beavers shattered every team and individual record in school history during the 2019 fall campaign en route to earning the Mark Laesch Award for the most significant improvement from 2018-19 to 2019-20 across all three divisions of NCAA women's golf! Bluffton also had four of its members earn WGCA All-American Scholar honors.

Sophomore Haley Gill (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central) posted a school-record 94.23 scoring average last year, taking over the top spot by a whopping 10 strokes. She scored under 100 for all but two of her 13 rounds last fall. Finding herself at the top of the 18-hole record book is junior Brylee Oberdorf (Green Springs/Clyde) who eclipsed her 2018 record-score of 90 with an 85 as a sophomore. The Beavers recorded eight rounds below 90, led by three from Oberdorf who will be a junior in 2020-21.

Oberdorf finished the season with a 95.77 scoring average. Right behind her were junior Abby Bullion (Bellevue) and sophomore Marissa Hall (Avon Lake) with their identical 95.85 season averages. Keely Briggs (Franklin), who was just off the pace with a 96.62 scoring average, fired a 174 at the UNOH Invitational, setting the school record for 36 holes thanks to two of the top four 18-hole scores in Bluffton women's golf history (86-88).

Bluffton hosted the HCAC Championships and placed eighth last fall. With no golfer on the women's team older than a sophomore in 2019-20, the Beavers have their sights set even higher this season. A busy opening week is on tap when the women open with the HCAC Preview on September 5-6 as they compete three times in four days. The annual Beaver Classic is slated for September 19-20 with Saturday at Bluffton and Sunday at Hidden Creek. With the transition to a three-day Heartland Conference championship, the Beavers will compete at Miami Whitewater Forest GC from October 9-11.
