Heidelberg scores late for 1-0 win

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team set its sights on keeping Heidelberg College (1-4) winless on Wednesday, September 12, 2007, but a goal by Katelyn Mcbeath with five minutes to play broke the scoreless tie and dropped the Beavers to 1-2 on the season.

Junior ELYSE BURCKHART (Telford, Penn/Souderton) just missed putting Bluffton on top early when LAUREN SWEENEY stopped her shot from the right wing. The Beavers' fired back-to-back shots at Sweeney late in the first half, but ALLISON WHITE (Lima/Shawnee) and senior LAUREN FAIRCHILD (Toledo/Whitmer) could not get their attempts past her as Bluffton and Heidelberg went to the break scoreless.

Bluffton's best chance to get on the scoreboard came in minute 63 when White rifled a shot from the box off the crossbar, keeping the contest tied. Freshman PAIGE CORRESSEL(Wauseon/Wauseon) placed a shot on goal four minutes later, but neither team was able to generate a substantial offensive until Katelyn McBeath took a perfect feed from ALISON MARTY on the right wing and drilled a shot into the left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead after 85 minutes of action.

MEGHAN FORQUER (North Canton/Green) missed wide right less than 30 seconds after the Heidelberg score and White forced Sweeney to seal the Student Princes victory with a save at the 89:32 mark as Heidelberg picked up its first victory of the year.

White, and NICOLE FREY (Wauseon/Wauseon) both took three shots while Forquer and Corressel added two shots. SAMANTHA WILLIAMS (Toledo/Bowsher) picked up four saves and the Heidelberg goal was only the first she has given up in nearly two games as the Bluffton keeper.

Heidelberg forced four corner kicks while not allowing any on their end of the field. The Beavers fired 12 shots compared to 11 for the Student Princes. Both squads placed six shots on goal.

Bluffton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 15, when it makes the trip to Lexington, Kentucky, to battle HCAC rival Transylvania. The match with the Pioneers is slated to start at 12 p.m.
