Marietta downs Bluffton 3-1 in tourney opener

MARIETTA, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team fell behind early with a pair of goals from Pioneer Cara Nuss in the first half, giving Marietta the victory, 3-1, on Saturday, September 5, 2009. The Beavers dropped to 1-1 overall, while the Pioneers improved to 2-0 for the 2009 season.

In the first half, Nuss scored two goals for Marietta, one at the 16:30 mark and the other with just over 14 minutes left in the half. Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Pioneers found the net once again to increase their lead to 3-0.
 
A Pioneer foul just outside of the penalty box gave the Beavers' a free kick during the 65th minute of the game. Sophomore Caitlin White (Lima/Central Catholic) seized the moment and bent the ball just inside the near post for the lone Bluffton goal of the match.
 
Marietta took 30 shots, compared to just 12 for Bluffton. The Pioneers also forced six corner kicks and collected 15 fouls. Katy Wisby (Lancaster/Bloom-Carroll) and Maddie Moore (Linn Grove, Ind./South Adams) fired seven and two shots respectively. Beaver goalkeeper Molly Martin (Brookville) tallied 13 saves during the match.
 
The Bluffton women will play either Wooster or St. Vincent in the consolation game of the tournament on Sunday, September 6, 2009. The match is slated to start at 9 a.m.
