Bluffton opens 2011 with 3-0 shutout of DII St. Joseph's

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Bluffton University soccer team opened its 2011 campaign with a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's (Ind.) at Moody Bible College on Sept. 3. The Pumas slipped to 0-1 with their opening-day loss to the  Beavers.

Freshman Taylor Fultz (Camden/Preble Shawnee) put Bluffton up 1-0 less than 12 minutes into her first collegiate match. She collected a pass from sophomore Jessica Ramirez (Archbold) and cashed in for the Beavers. Early in period two, fellow freshman Kathleen Reid (Midlothian, VA/Manchester) made the score 2-0 with her unassisted goal. Ramirez capped the scoring with her first goal of the season from Aimee Whitmer (Grand Rapids/Otsego) at the 69:46 mark.

Bluffton took one more shot than St. Joseph's (12-11), including a 10-7 advantage on frame. The Pumas forced one more corner kick (8-7), while Bluffton was whistled for one more infraction (15-14).

Fultz put all four of her shots on target to lead the Bluffton offense. Kourtney Lewis (Arlington/Riverdale) and Ramirez chipped in with three and two shots, respectively.

The Beavers travel to Huntington University to play the Foresters on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The contest is slated to start at 2 p.m.
