Shawnee State rallies for 5-2 win over Beavers

September 8, 2012

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team went up 2-0 midway through the first half, but Shawnee State responded with four second half scores en route to a 5-2 victory over the Beavers on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012. Bluffton slipped to 1-2 on the season, while Shawnee State moved to 2-3 overall.

Freshman LAURA FISH (Findlay/Liberty-Benton) sparked the Bluffton offense with a pair of goals in the first 25 minutes of action. She buried a direct kick at the 9:58 mark and followed that with a penalty kick 15 minutes later for a quick 2-0 Beaver advantage.

A BRITTANY BROOKS penalty make at the 34:33 mark cut the deficit in half as the visitors took a 2-1 lead into the break. Shawnee State quickly erased the deficit less than two minutes into period two and the Bears never looked back as they added three more tallies for a 5-2 win over the Beavers.

MADDIE MOORE (Linn Grove, Ind./South Adams) led the Beavers with four shots, while Fish and AIMEE WHITMER (Grand Rapids/Otsego) both fired three shots. Junior keeper MAGGIE ARMSTRONG (Vevay, Ind./Switzerland Cty.) picked up seven saves in the loss.

Shawnee finished with two more shots (16-14) and the Beavers racked up two more fouls (13-11). The home team forced one more corner kick (3-2).

Bluffton returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 12, when the Beavers travel to St. Francis. The contest is slated for 5 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Ind.
