Beavers punish Defiance in 3-0 shutout

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's soccer team swatted away rival Defiance 3-0 in the first matchup between the teams since the Jackets departed the HCAC and NCAA for the NAIA. Defiance fell to 0-5 on the season, while Bluffton improved to 2-1-1.

Parker Penhorwood (Bellefontaine) found fellow freshman Katie Singleton (Hamilton/Badin) for a Bluffton tally midway through the first half before another frosh, Brysan Brewer (Middletown), made it 2-0 at the break with her goal late in the opening stanza.

Sophomore Mya Vernon (Toledo/Central Catholic) iced it with just over 25 minutes to play when she found the back of the net for a 3-0 Beaver lead.

Bluffton finished with a whopping 37 shots, including 13 on frame, compared to just four shots from the home team, none which required any action from senior keeper Brielle Collier (Anna).

The visitors forced 10 of the 11 corner kicks in the match and they were whistled for eight more fouls (11-3).

Vernon and Alyssa Kester (Centerville) fired six and five shots, respectively. Brewer chipped in with four attempts. Kester and Reece Lawler (Vandalia/Butler) helped the cause with assists for the Beavers.

Bluffton gets right back to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11, when the Beavers welcome UC-Clermont to Salzman Stadium for a 7 p.m. meeting on the turf.
