Franklin's Waterman, Defiance's Stein Earn HCAC Women's Track & Field Honors

GREENWOOD, IN – Franklin College's Heather Waterman (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown) and Defiance College's Holly Stein (Fort Recovery, Ohio/H.S.) have been named 2009 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Year and Field Athlete of the Year, respectively. Waterman led the Grizzlies to a third place finish at the championships while Stein helped Defiance place second at the meet held at Rose-Hulman on April 24-25.

Waterman, a sophomore for the Grizzlies, won three events at the HCAC Championships. She won the 800 meter run in a first place time of 2:22.67, the 1,500 meter run in 4:56.31, and claimed first in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 19:16.03. She was the lone female athlete to win three events and led the meet scoring with 30 individual points.

Stein, a sophomore on the Defiance squad, claimed two first place finishes and a second place finish at the meet to help the Jackets to a second place finish. The sophomore won the discus throw with a toss of 39.64 meters and claimed first in the javelin with a throw of 35.86 meters. Stein finished second in the shot put with a throw of 11.94 meters.

Also receiving recognition for her efforts at the meet is Defiance freshman Marlea Rolander (Napoleon, Ohio/H.S.). Rolander won the 100 meter hurdles and finished fifth in the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the meet. The freshman won the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.64.

Manchester's Brian Cashdollar was named the HCAC Coach of the Year after leading the Spartans to the team title. Cashdollar led the Spartans to their first ever women's track and field conference championship, garnering 134 points to hold off Defiance (132.5 pts) and Franklin (131 pts).
