Beavers finish in third place at Manchester Tournament

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University volleyball team (12-16, 0-6 HCAC) came up with a victory over Earlham College on Friday, October 28, before Manchester and Urbana College defeated the Beavers 3-0 in both matches on Saturday. These two losses left Bluffton with a 1-2 record which was good for third place. 

The Beavers opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Earlham College by scores of 30-26, 30-21, 30-25.  BRITTANY SHULTZ (Jr. Hudson, IN/Prairie Heights) led Bluffton with 22 assists, CHELSEA WYSE (Fr. Archbold/ Archbold) led Bluffton with 19 digs and KERI KUHLMAN (Sr. Shelby/Shelby) led the team in kills with 12.

On Saturday, October 29, 2005, Bluffton was defeated by Manchester College 3-0 by scores of 30-23, 30-21, 30-22. Kuhlman knocked down 13 kills which moved her to third place in career kills, passing Sara Wakefield (Lehman), who finished her career with 1,234. RACHEL ALVAREZ (So. Convoy/Crestview) had nine kills, the highest hitting percentage for the team with .345 and led the Beavers with 21 digs. Shultz recorded 22 assists during the match.

Urbana handed Bluffton its second loss of the day by a match score of 3-0, including game scores of 30-17, 30-23, 30-17. Alvarez had an impressive match as she led the team in kills with 11, hitting percentage at .345 and digs with 13. Shultz led the team with15 assists. Kuhlman added eight kills which moved her into a second place tie with Amanda Trenkamp for career kills with 1,250.

Kuhlman, who finished the weekend with 33 kills, four service aces, five blocks and 20 digs, was named to the All-Tournament Team at Manchester. 

The Beavers travel to face Defiance College in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match-up on Tuesday, November 1. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
