Beavers drop three at Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Bluffton University volleyball team (6-15) traveled to Tiffin on September 30 for the Tiffin University Tournament. The Beavers finished the weekend with a 0-3 record. In the first match, Bluffton dropped a five-game decision to Virginia Intermont College. The Beavers then lost their second match of the day to Shawnee State in four games. Host Tiffin defeated Bluffton, 3-0, in the final match of the tournament for the Beavers.

Freshman MICHELE ROSEN (Harrison/Harrison) led the Beavers with 15 kills in the loss to Virginia Intermont. Junior RACHEL ALVAREZ (Convoy/Crestview) and freshman JORDAN SCIFRES (Greenwood, Ind./Lutheran) added 12 and 11 kills respectively. Senior setter BRITTANY SHULTZ (Hudson, Ind./Prairie Heights) picked up 47 assists and four service aces in the match. Freshman BRITTANY ROTH (Findlay/Findlay) led the Beavers in digs with 31 as she was one of four who finished the match in double-digits. Shultz, sophomore CHELSEA WYSE (Archbold/Archbold) and Scifres also reached the double-digit mark with 19, 15 and 13 digs respectively.

In the second match against Shawnee State, Rosen once again led the Beavers with 15 kills as she hit a team high .387. Freshman ANNA VIARS (Lebanon/Lebanon) contributed with 10 kills for the match. Scifres continued her solid all-around play finishing the match with 17 digs, four service aces, and five kills. Shultz distributed the ball effectively as she tallied 32 assists and 10 digs.

In the final match of the tournament for Bluffton, the Beavers struggled during a three-set loss to an excellent Tiffin squad. Scifres led Bluffton, hitting at a .379 clip and tallying 13 kills. Roth finished the match with 19 digs, while Shultz led the Beavers with 24 assists.

Bluffton returns to action on Tuesday, October 3, 2006, when it will host Ohio Wesleyan in Founders Hall. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
