Beavers drop two at Earlham College

RICHMOND, Ind. - The Bluffton University  volleyball team traveled to Richmond for a tri-match against Allegheny College and the host Earlham College Quakers on Saturday, October 28, 2006. The Beavers fell to 9-22 on the season thanks to a pair of losses, in four games to Allegheny (11-20) and in three games to the Quakers (14-15).

Allegheny took the first match of the afternoon by game scores of 26-30, 30-24, 30-20 and 30-18.

MICHELE ROSEN (Harrison/Harrison), who paced the Beavers with 24 kills on the afternoon, finished the Allegheny match with 11 kills and two block assists. Freshman middle hitter AUDRA COLEMAN (Lima/Central Catholic) tallied 10 kills and five block assists in the four-game loss. Her counterpart in the middle, freshman ANNA VIARS (Lebanon/Lebanon), put up two solo blocks and three block assists while outside hitter JORDAN SCIFRES (Greenwood, Ind./Lutheran) led Bluffton with three solo blocks and two block assists. Junior hitter KALLA AESCHLIMAN (Wauseon/Wauseon) pounded nine kills and hit .214 against Allegheny.

Defensively, BRITTANY ROTH (Findlay/Findlay) picked up 28 digs to lead the Beavers, while CHELSEA WYSE (Archbold/Archbold), who paced the Bluffton setters with 21 assists, reached double digits in digs (10) as well. Senior setter BRITTANY SHULTZ (Hudson, Ind./Prairie Heights) finished with 17 assists and three service aces.

In the second match of the day, Bluffton found itself on the wrong side of a 3-0 match score. The Quakers took the match by scores of 30-19, 30-27 and 30-20.

Rosen smashed 13 kills and hit .258 in the match. Despite only nine total attacks, Coleman ripped seven kills for a .556 hitting percentage. She also led the Beavers with two block assists.

Roth did the job in the back row as she finished with 15 digs while sophomore defensive specialist KATE BARNETT (North Bloomfield/Lakeview) chipped in with 13. Shultz set up the Bluffton hitters with 29 assists.

The Beavers return to Founders Hall on Tuesday, October 31, when they will welcome Heartland Conference rival Defiance College for a Halloween showdown on Senior Night and a berth in the 2006 HCAC tournament. Bluffton's final regular-season match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
