Bluffton sweeps Muskingum and Allegheny

BEXLEY, Ohio - In back-to-back matches, the Bluffton University women's volleyball team took down two opponents in their first day at the Capital University Tournament on Friday, Sept. 3, 2010. The Beavers opened up competition with Muskingum University, taking down the Muskies in three sets, 25-17, 25-22, 25-16. They then went on to beat the Gators of Allegheny College in another three sets, 25-18, 25-15, 25-13. Their two victories of the day now place them at 3-0 on the season.

Against Muskingum, junior Jenna Eshleman (Landisville, Penn./Hempfield) led all attackers with 16 kills. She was followed by teammates Nicole Wood (Tiffin/Hopewell-Loudon) and Courtney Zimmerman (Leesburg/Fairfield), who had nine and eight kills, respectively. Senior setter Shauna Rowland paced the Beaver attack with 37 assists.

In their second match-up of the day, Zimmerman put down eight kills, while Eshleman followed closely with six kills and Wood with five kills. Rowland once more led the offense as she dished out eight assists. Sophomore libero Heather Schierer (Crescent Springs, Ky./St. Henry) slammed four service aces and senior opposite hitter Allison Streicher contributed two aces of her own. Eshleman led the team in digs with seven, and Streicher and Schierer each had four digs apiece.

On Saturday, the Beavers continue their play at Capital as they take on Albion at 11:30 a.m. followed by a final match in the afternoon.
