Beavers take Capital tournament title

BEXLEY, Ohio - The Bluffton University women's volleyball team took down two more opponents in their second day of play at the Capital University tournament on Saturday, Sept. 4. First, the Beavers defeated Albion College in three straight sets, 25-10, 25-13, 25-15. Next, they took down the Terriers of Hiram College in four sets, 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22. With the two victories, Bluffton now stands at 5-0 going into their second week of play.

Against the Britons, the Beavers were led by outside hitters JENNA ESHLEMAN (Landisville, Penn./Hempfield) and NICOLE WOOD(Tiffin/Hopewell-Loudon), who both tallied nine kills apiece. They were followed by junior COURTNEY ZIMMERMAN(Leesburg/Fairfield), who had eight kills, and senior HEATHER RODMAN (Mansfield/Mansfield Christian) with five kills. The offense was directed by seniors SHAUNA ROWLAND(Bucyrus/Wynford) and ALLISON STREICHER (Continental), who dished out 21 and 18 assists, respectively.
Defensively, sophomore HEATHER SCHIERER (Crescent Spring, Ky./ St. Henry) led with 13 digs. Freshman HAILEY PHILLIPS(Malinta/Patrick Henry) and Rodman had one solo block each, while Zimmerman contributed two block assists. Junior MEGHAN DODSON (Tiffin/Calvert) also served up three service aces for the Beavers.
In an afternoon showdown with Hiram College, Bluffton was led by Streicher, who slammed down 17 kills, while Eshleman and Wood followed closely with 10 kills each. Rowland handed out 39 assists. Schierer once again led the defense with 16 digs, while Rowland and Eshleman scooped up 15 digs each. Streicher rifled three service aces, while Eshleman and Schierer slammed down two aces each.
Next, the Beavers travel to Kentucky to take on non-conference opponent Thomas More on Tuesday, Sept. 7, before they head to Kenyon College for their second tournament of the season next weekend.
