MSJ rallies for five-set win at Bluffton

BLUFFTON, Ohio - In an intense Heartland Conference battle on Wednesday, Sept. 22, the College of Mount St. Joseph defeated the Bluffton University Beavers in their conference opener in five sets, 25-27, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 15-11. The Beavers now stand 12-4 overall, 0-1 in the HCAC, while The Mount moves to 6-6 overall and 1-0 in HCAC play.

The Beaver offense was led by hitters JENNA ESHLEMAN(Landisville, Penn./Hempfield) and ALLISON STREICHER(Continental), who had 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Junior COURTNEY ZIMMERMAN (Leesburg/Fairfield) also was a force at the net with 12 kills. Shauna Rowland (Bucyrus/Wynford) once again directed the Beaver offense by dishing out 51 assists. Likewise, the Beavers also kept the Lions on their heels with HAILEY PHILLIPs' (Malinta/Patrick Henry) three service aces, as well as an ace apiece for Streicher and HEATHER SCHIERER (Crescent Hills Ky./St. Henry).
 
Defensively, Bluffton was led by Schierer with 17 digs, Eshleman with 16 digs, and MANDI LEEMASTER (Fremont/Old Fort) with 10 digs. HEATHER RODMAN (Mansfield/Christian) also had four blocks in the effort.
 
The Beavers' next competition is scheduled for Wednesday, September 29, against conference opponent Manchester College. The contest with the Spartans will be dedicated as a Dig Pink match in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Week. Match time is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Founders Hall
