Bluffton splits on day one at Spiketacular

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Sommer Center Spiketacular returned to campus on Friday, Sept. 9, bringing a total of seven outstanding teams to Bluffton, including Ohio Northern, DePauw, Thomas More, Kenyon, Geneva and Heidelberg.

In the opening match, the Beavers started off with an incredible battle against Heidelberg. Bluffton defeated the Student Princes for just the second time since 2000. The four-setter had 36 tie scores and 13 lead changes before the Beavers came out on top (25-27, 25-22, 27-25, and 25-16).

At the net, MacKenzie McFarlin (Ashland) dominated the Heidelberg defense, landing 15 kills while Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) and Lauren Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) added 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) dished out 38 assists to go along with her 13 digs. Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Christian) topped the defense with 27 digs while Becca Tourney (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) led the team with three aces.

After a  four-hour break, Bluffton faced their second Spiketacular opponent, DePauw. The Beavers fell in straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-22). MacKenzie McFarlin and  Lauren Weisgarber led Bluffton from the front line with 12 and nine kills, respectively. Erin Weisgarber dished out 25 assists against the Tigers. Juniors Sydney Mohler and Becca Tourney chipped in 16 and 10 digs from the backrow.

The Beavers will lace them up again tomorrow at 12 p.m against Kenyon and 4 p.m versus Thomas More.
