Bluffton caps off 3-0 weekend at Spalding

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The Bluffton University volleyball team made the most of its trip to Louisville with a perfect 3-0 weekend at Spalding University. Bluffton opened its Saturday slate with a sweep of Grenville before needing four sets to knock off host Spalding on September 15.

Bluffton trailed 14-12 midway through the first set against Greenville before seven straight Sarah Heydinger (Tiro/Buckeye Central) serves powered a 13-6 spurt for a 25-19 victory in the lidlifter. The Beavers claimed a hard-fought 25-23 win in set two before downing the Panthers 25-15 for the sweep.

Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) rained down 13 kills on Greenville, while Heydinger and Remi Bower (Hamler/Patrick Henry) pounded eight spikes apiece. Senior setter Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) hit .357 with six kills and 34 assists for the victors. Jessie Gibson was outstanding with five kills and six blocks. Freshman libero Brooke Kleman (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) scooped up a match-high 15 digs.

Five Beavers piled up double-digit kills in the win over Spalding, including four with 12 apiece. Bower, Martini, Gibson and freshman Maddie White (Ashland) all landed a dozen, while Weisgarber netted a triple double with 44 assists, 11 kills and 14 digs. Gibson torched the Eagles with a .444 hitting percentage thanks to no errors on 27 swings.

Kleman paced the Beaver defense with 22 digs, while senior back row specialists Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) and Courtney Zimpfer (Jackson Center) picked up 13 and 11, respectively. Martini added 12 digs to go along with her 12 kills.

Bluffton returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 19, when the Beavers travel to Wilmington College for a non-league tussle with the Quakers. The first serve is slated for 7 p.m.
