Beavers move to 3-1 with Saturday victories

SANDUSKY, Ohio - The Bluffton University volleyball team picked up where it left off Friday night, downing Washington & Jefferson and Waynesburg at the Cedar Point Sports Complex on Saturday, Aug. 31. Bluffton stands 3-1 after the opening weekend of NCAA Division III volleyball!

Bluffton had a hiccup in set three, but Coach Yarnell and his troops righted the ship with a 25-21 win in the fourth for a 3-1 victory over Washington & Jefferson Saturday morning. Sophomore Chloe Sample (Springfield/Catholic Central) led three Beavers in double figures with 13 kills. Jenna Woods (DeGraff/Riverside) and Chloei Barnett (Wapakoneta) chimed in with 21 and 11, respectively. Kasey Sager (Troy) slammed home nine winners in the opener.

Sophomore Gabby Williams (West Liberty/West Liberty-Salem) directed the offense with 42 assists and she fired four aces. Sophomore Abby Lawhorn (Cable/Mechanicsburg) and freshman Saniyah Terry (Macomb, MI/L Anse Creuse HS North) tallied 17 and 12 pickups, respectively.

Junior Paige Massie (Alvada/Arcadia) stuffed W&J with seven blocks, while Woods and Sager were in on five apiece.

A sweep was on the menu when Bluffton lined up against Waynesburg on Saturday after lunch. Barnett pounded 10 kills and Sager was nearly unstoppable, hitting .421 with nine kills against just one miscue!

Williams doled out 27 assists and she also helped the cause with a team-high five aces. Lawhorn contined to clean everyting up in the back, leading the Beavers with 13 digs.

Bluffton travels to Gambier for a 7 p.m. matchup with Kenyon of the NCAC on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
