The Bluffton College men's and women's cross country teams finished up their season at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference meet on October 27, 2001 at Mounds State Park in Indiana. Both squads finished sixth in the events and narrowly missed out on higher finishes.

Freshman MaryAnna Morgan led the BC women's squad with a 27th place finish out of 80 runners in a time of 21:14 placing her 27th. Finishing second for the Beavers was Ben Noll, running a 21:44 and placing 36th. Third was Jennifer Niedermier (21:47, 39th), fourth was Katie Gwirtz (21:59, 42nd), and rounding out the scoring was Rachael Szydlowski (22:01, 43rd). Also finishing for the women was Kristen Stager (22:16, 46th), Alyssa Inniger (22:41, 53rd), Jennifer Oyer (22:58, 57th), Rachel Noirot (23:05, 58th), Mandy Borgelt (23:59, 65th), Kristie Wiltsie (24:00, 66th), and Lindsey Channels (24:07, 67th). 

"We had a little bit of a disappointing meet on the women's side," said Head Coach Derek Stanley. "I thought we would be a little fresher today, but some of the women looked tired. MaryAnna had a good race as well as Katie Gwirtz and Rachael Szydlowski. Wiltstie also had an excellent race. They just didn't come together like I want them to today, but figuring out why is the challenge." 

On the men's side the race was pretty exciting for 4th place as Junior Steve Borga led the Beavers finishing 29th out of 58 runners and covering the 8000m course in 29:42. Following Borga were freshman Roy Kaplan (29:46, 30th), Andy Schiefer (29:57, 33rd), Mitch Stacy (30:05, 35th), and rounding out the scoring was Chris White (31:06, 44th). Also running for the men's team was Jeremy "Q" Gaub (34:02, 54th) and Trevor Cupples (34:22, 55th).

"I don't think I was more excited or animated during a race than I was today," said Coach Stanley. "I was talking to the men all the way through the race trying to get them to make moves and push through the packs, and they did just that. The men did exactly what I wanted them to do, we just came up a little short. They gave me a 100% effort and that is all I can ask for!"
